Nature Immersion
Wilderness is a town in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, on a coastal stretch known as the Garden Route. It is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The backdrop to the town is steep green hills and mountains. The Map of Africa, a hilltop lookout point, has views of the Indian Ocean, the Outeniqua Mountains and the Kaaimans River. Nearby Wilderness Natural Park, part of the sprawling Garden Route National Park, is a habitat for wildlife including leopards, monkeys and eagles. Other areas of Wilderness are made up of quiet roads which mostly stretch either alongside the beach or the Touws River lagoon. The lagoon is a tranquil central feature of the town, which leads into the Wilderness National Park.
Surfing
South Africa is home to some of the best surf spots on earth and the Garden Route alone offers the most breathtaking seascapes to choose from. Whether you’re new to the sport or a master surfer, you’re sure to enjoy the many quality spots in this part of the country. Nearby surf spots include Wilderness, Buffelsbaai (Buffalo Bay), Herold’s Bay, Mossel Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Victoria Bay, Vleesbaai and the world famous Jeffrey’s Bay.
Lagoon
The Touw River Lagoon is a picturesque wetland, with warm shallow water perfect for swimming, rowing, fishing and birding. The northern edge of the estuary is flanked by a wooden boardwalk, which winds through reed beds and under Milkwood Trees. Visitors can take a guided cruise on the placid waters with Wilderness River Safaris or rent a kayak or stand-up-paddleboard from the Garden Route National Park (Ebb and Flow Rest Camp).
Fine Dining
There is a great selection of restaurants and bars in Wilderness. Many of these are situated in the town center. Most of the eateries have their own specific character or cuisine, with a number of different food types including Steak, Italian, Japanese and Mediterranean fare available. Other niche establishments specialize in craft beer and chocolate amongst other things. There is also a fine dining restaurant, as well as one that offers live music every night.
